Research...research...research...know what you are buying and have a plan for success. We can help you develop a unique business plan for your needs. We welcome the new breeder, you are the future of the alpaca business and we have a vested interest in your success!
Every Farm Is Different: We encourage potential breeders to visit several alpaca farms. Each visit will teach you something new. Look at how each farm handles shelter, feed, animal care and even alpaca training.
Create a business plan: If you are seriously considering alpacas as a business, start with a solid business plan. Consider every aspect of the business and raising alpacas. Things to consider are; start up costs (barns, feeders, hay, feed, water delivery & fencing). Consider the alpaca itself; are you going to raise Suri, Huacaya or both? Why would you choose one breed over the other? For the record a solid business case can be made for either breed. Based on your desired budget, consider what level you want to start at: The better the genetics of an alpaca the larger the investment. If you wish to enter the business with a bang you are looking for top, proven genetics. However, you can breed into top alpacas: buying more reasonable priced females and using outside breeding can bring needed quality and genetics to your farm. Also consider how much of your time you want to invest in your new business. Alpacas are easy and somewhat inexpensive to raise. However, as you herd grows so does your time investment. Be real about how long it will take to see a return on your initial investment. You would be the minority if you can make money in your first year of operation.
You need a marketing plan: Do not make the mistake that if you buy alpacas, breed alpacas and offer alpacas for sale that you will sell alpacas. We highly recommend that you educate yourself on marketing. You can find resources and information, attend seminars and even buy books. There are also companies that specialize in alpaca farm marketing. Knowledge is power when it comes to marketing. Every industry is different, so do not assume because you know how to market one product or service you can market alpacas without a solid plan.
Buyer Beware: In our experience alpaca breeders are serious and truly vested in the success of new breeders. But for the many, there are the few that will mislead and take advantage. As with any purchase you make, be sure, be smart and be careful. Choose a farm or breeder that is reputable. Ethics are not a forgone conclusion, they are part of your due diligence. Read every line of every agreement, do not get caught in a loop-hole that costs you money, time and grief.
