What is it? The Alpaca Lease Program is designed to allow New Breeders and Experienced Breeders an affordable program to increase herd size, enhance genetics or start in the Alpaca Business with less of an investment. We use proven females and sires to create the best possible cria.
How Does it Work? Safe Haven has hand picked selected females for the program. The females are proven to produce live, healthy crias to weaning. We have also hand selected herd sires with a proven track record of producing excellent off-spring. This is where the program begins:
1) You select the female you want the cria from. In some cases the female may not be bred, which affords you the opportunity to select the sire as well.
2) The female (and cria) is kept at Safe Haven Farm through gestation, birthing and weaning. Once the cria is weaned: You take your alpaca home.
* If you have a female cria, when she is ready: bring her back to Safe Haven for a 50% savings on the use of any herd sire we own...for the life of the female!!!
What is the cost? Depending on the female and sire, the cost ranges from $8500.00 to $15,000.00. Just like any other lease the payments are made over the term of the lease. Depending on where you come in during gestation, your payments could go as long as 17 months. Payments are either monthly or quarterly and we never charge interest on our lease program. There is no other charges for the program. The costs of birthing, raising and weaning your cria are included in the price.
So, why would you do this? Safe Haven Farm is truly vested in the alpaca industry and the growth of the alpaca in the United States. The best way to encourage new breeders and farms, is to offer an affordable alternative to private sales and auctions. The fact is: We want to share the alpaca lifestyle and help new farms and breeders get a solid start with advantages that help insure a grounded beginning and a successful future.
And, what's the catch? No Catch here, no fine print, no sales-person is plaid. It is a simple proposition from a breeder with experience and top genetics. Look: We offer a three day live cria guarantee. We offer flexible payments. We offer a selection of females and top males. You assume some risk (the same risk that all breeders have really) that the cria will be something special and will be of greater value than what you spent on the program. The risk is reduced because of experience and solid advice. However, there is risk. You do not know what color or sex you will get. You have no way of guessing if the off-spring will be breeding quality. That is why we offer a lower cost of investment. You assume some of the risk, so we can offer a great price.
After the three day guarantee, then what? After the cria is 72 hours old, we raise your cria to weaning. The only potential added cost would be extra medical needs. The costs of care, shots, tip-shearing (if you want it done), halter training, feed and shelter are included in the price. If your alpaca requires an x-ray or ultra-sound, or some other unexpected medical need, we will make every effort to contact you before we authorize our Veterinarian from TUFTS University to do it. In an emergency situation: we will make a decision for the health of the alpaca. This is your alpaca and we will respect and carry out your wishes. The end result and over-all goal is for you take your alpaca home when it is around six months of age. Of course, if you get a female, we hope to see her back for a discounted breeding to one of our sires.
If you want to know more: Contact either Steve Putney or Chris Martel. If you are ready to look into the program: come by the farm Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and speak with us and take a look at our alpacas. After a few minutes on the farm, we are sure you will agree that this program is a winning way for you to go!
